From the very start of her term with the Exiles, it was apparent that the mentality of Magik was different from that of her teammates with her morals more akin to those belonging to their reality-hopping counterparts Weapon X. Illyana was more brutal than she had to be, adamant on solving problems to move the Exiles on even if her solutions were by the way of pain or death of others.
Magik would justify her wicked actions against others by stating she did what needed to be done to them in that reality so that their counterparts in millions of other worlds would be able to survive. However, this mentality appeared to be taking a change when the Exiles were instructed by the Tallus to exterminate the Avengers, an Avengers team that included an alternate version of her brother Colossus. Faced with having to kill her older sibling, Illyana became hesitant, thus jeopardizing the mission that she took upon herself when the other Exiles had already abandoned their task. She explained her situation to the remaining Avengers, but they would deem her a liar. Fortunately, the great love of Colossus for his sister, alternate reality or not, let him believe in her and, because he believed she deserved her chance to get back to her reality, Colossus killed himself and his teammates so Illyana could move one step closer to home.
The psychological repercussions of this traumatic event would act to bolster Illyana's previous cutthroat frame of mind. Her aggressive actions would continue to ostracize her from the rest of her teammates, until a rift in the team was created after Mimic caused the death of Sunfire. An angered and upset Morph distanced himself from the rest of the team to cope with the loss and Magik would follow him to try and offer her condolences. However, Morph was not receptive, calling Magik a killer worse than Mimic. At this point, Magik finally reveals why she has been so unyieldingly vicious. If her reality is not repaired, she will go back to her reality and kill everyone she loves as she slaughters her entire family in her broken timeline. Opening up to Morph would be the first and only time she would feel normal since she first arrived.
On this same world, the Exiles were told by the Tallus that, of the twelve people from Exiles and Weapon X that had convened in this dimension, only six would move on and the rest must die. True to form, Magik became overly obsessed with abiding by the instructions of the Tallus in order to move on and repair her timeline. As a result, Magik drew her Soulsword and inflicts Sasquatch with a fatal wound in a failed attempt to kill Nocturne. Guessing that her chances to move on to the next world are better with Hyperion, the de facto leader of what remained of Weapon X than with her teammates, she teleports to his side and informs him of the mission. However, Hyperion is skeptical of Magik and believes he is being tricked. To see if she is telling the truth or not, Hyperion snaps her neck and waits to see if anyone is sent by the Timebroker as a replacement for her.
